The Fairytale Society had such great entries for our first contest! Unicorns are a favorite of mine and so it seemed only fitting to have the first contest be a tribute to these beautiful fantasy creatures. It’s amazing what you all can do with a bit of fabric, ribbon, and photography magic! Each photo was beautiful in its own way, which made this a very hard competition to judge! Here at The Fairytale Society we are glad we did not have to choose the three semi-finalists – that was done by you, our lovely readers!
But then came the hard part – choosing the winner from those three! But before we announce who it the lucky winner of the $25 Etsy gift card, let’s learn a bit more about the semi-finalists.
Ashley Blankenship

Ashley’s entry captures a perfectly magical moment with a young maiden and her unicorn. Dottie Jean, the unicorn, was born on Ashley Blankenship’s grandparents 400-acre farm in Oregon. She often got dressed up and attended children’s parties. This photo was taken before one such party, by Doni Jones. It’s her daughter, Jayden, in the photo. Unfortunately, Dottie Jean passed away on November 19. She lived to be 18, far too young for such a special being.
Melanie Smith Rodgers

Melanie’s entry looks like a scene straight out of a fairy tale. Everything about it is romantic and charming – the lighting, the flowing dresses that look like they are moving even in the still picture, the white unicorn with wreaths of sweet flowers ‘round her crown. Melanie’s own daughters are the subjects of the photo, who were 2.5 and 4 years old at the time. The photo was taken by Jillian Varnea Photography who supplied the lovely unicorn, named Olaf.
Shayna Abbott

Shayna’s entry is reminiscent of Disney’s Maleficent – a dark fae with her unicorn contrast splendidly against the snowy background. The photo was taken by Ichabod Krow. The darky fairy is Betty McClain wearing a headdress by Copricapo Designs. Her dark unicorn is Zildjian, a percheron-quarter horse cross who was rescued as a PMU foal. As you can see, all of these photos are lovely and deserve to win, but alas, we had to pick a favorite! And so, the winner for the $25 Etsy gift card is
Melanie Smith Rodgers!
Congratulations!
